What is ‘Tribal Food Sovereignty’?

There’s no universal definition for tribal food sovereignty, but it often described as the ability of Native communities to determine the quantity and quality of the food that they consume by controlling how their food is produced and distributed. It can include food access, right to collect and share traditional foods, inclusion of a bartering economy, Indigenous food ways and knowledge about nutrition, traditional food preservation, and food as medicine.

Many food pantries are working now to include more traditional foods and incorporating distribution systems that honor cultural traditions and ensuring access for those that cannot drive to a food distribution center.
